Las Vegas TMD Dentist Say More Adults Are Using Orthodontics to Get Ahead
Oct 26, 2011
LAS VEGAS, NV -- In the past two decades, twenty-five percent of all orthodontic patients have been adults, according to the American Association of Orthodontics, reporting that women seeking treatment outnumber men by three to one. Dr. David Alpan, a Las Vegas TMD dentist, says the trend in adults getting braces will continue to increase and the ratio of men choosing to visit an orthodontist will start to balance out. At his practice Aesthetic Orthodontics, he has noticed more men, including lawyers, doctors and other business professionals, getting orthodontic treatment.
"Orthodontics has almost become a rite of passage for adolescents, but with more discrete options like Invisalign and Incognito, adults are opting for bite correction and aesthetic improvement," says Alpan, a children's orthodontist.
According to an article in the Albany-based Times Union newspaper, there are approximately a million adults in the United States who get braces each year.
"Business professionals, in particular, want braces without the inconveniences regular braces may have for their image and day-to-day life," says Alpan, who also offers Invisalign Teen and Damon braces.
The article says the most common reason for orthodontic treatment is aesthetic changes, but others cite the health benefits that orthodontics provides. Straight teeth and a proper bite help prevent oral health issues, including tooth decay, bone loss and periodontal disease that can lead to loss of teeth and the need for crowns, bridges, dental implants and dentures. Studies have also proved that good oral health also has a positive impact on systemic health.
"No matter what age, patients can reap the oral health benefits of properly aligned teeth," says Dr. Alpan. "It is good to see the perception of adult orthodontics changing."
